Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel war der populärste General des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Unter seiner genialen Führung stieß das deutsche Afrikakorps bis nach Ägypten vor. Selbst der britische Gegner bewunderte den Mut und die ritterliche Kampfführung des als unschlagbar geltenden "Wüstenfuchses". So steht es in unseren Geschichtsbüchern. Aber Ralf Georg Reuth porträtiert einen anderen Rommel, einen, der seinen Ruhm nicht zuletzt der NS-Propaganda verdankte und dessen Rolle im Widerstand bis heute verklärt gesehen wird, der von Hitler gefördert wurde und ihm treu blieb bis zu seinem Ende, als er am 14. Oktober 1944 auf Befehl des Führers Selbstmord beging. In seinem Schicksal spiegelt sich damit die deutsche Tragödie jener Zeit: "dem Führer in den Untergang gefolgt zu sein und dabei geglaubt zu haben, die soldatische Pflicht zu erfüllen."
